Car Aircon Not Cool? Call mRKOOL !

Why Is Water Dripping From Your Car Aircon? When It Is Normal and When to Be Concerned

If you notice a small puddle of water underneath your car after parking, your first reaction may be to worry that something is leaking. In Singapore, where drivers use their car air-conditioning almost every day, water dripping from the vehicle is actually very common.

In many cases, it is completely normal. However, water appearing in the wrong place — especially inside the car — can indicate a problem that should be inspected.

Understanding where the water comes from can help you tell the difference between normal aircon condensation and a possible car aircon issue.

Why Does a Car Aircon Produce Water?

Your car air-conditioning system does more than cool the cabin. It also removes moisture from the air.

Singapore’s climate is hot and humid, which means the air entering your vehicle can contain a significant amount of moisture. When warm, humid air passes over the cold evaporator inside the air-conditioning system, moisture in the air condenses into water droplets.

It is similar to the condensation that forms on the outside of a cold drink.

This water collects in a drain tray and leaves the vehicle through an aircon drain tube.

Therefore, seeing clear water dripping underneath your car after using the aircon is generally normal.

How Much Water Is Normal?

The amount of condensation can vary depending on several factors, including:

  • How humid the weather is
  • How long you have been driving
  • How cold your aircon setting is
  • How long the vehicle has been idling with the aircon running

On a particularly humid day in Singapore, you may notice a fairly visible puddle underneath the vehicle after parking.

If the liquid is clear, odourless and located around the area where the aircon drain exits, it is usually condensation rather than a mechanical leak.

When Water Inside the Car Is Not Normal

Water beneath the vehicle is generally normal. Water inside the passenger compartment is not.

If you notice damp carpeting, wet floor mats or water dripping around the passenger footwell, the aircon drainage system could be blocked.

Dust, dirt or debris can sometimes obstruct the evaporator drain tube. When condensation cannot escape properly, water may back up and overflow into the cabin.

Ignoring the problem can create additional issues.

Constant moisture inside the car may result in:

  • Musty smells
  • Mould or bacteria growth
  • Damp carpets
  • Interior staining
  • Increased cabin humidity

In severe cases, prolonged water exposure could also affect nearby electrical components.

Why Does an Aircon Drain Become Blocked?

The air-conditioning system continuously handles moisture, dust and airborne particles.

Over time, dirt may accumulate around the evaporator housing or drainage path. Organic material and debris can also contribute to a blockage.

A technician can inspect the aircon drainage system and determine whether the drain needs to be cleaned.

Simply drying the carpet without addressing the source of the water will not solve the underlying issue.

What If the Liquid Is Not Clear Water?

Not every puddle underneath a vehicle comes from the air-conditioning system.

Vehicle fluids can have different colours and textures.

For example, coolant may appear green, pink, blue or another colour depending on the product being used. Engine oil is generally darker and oily, while other automotive fluids may also have distinctive colours or smells.

If you are unsure what is leaking from your vehicle, it is better to have it inspected rather than assume it is aircon condensation.

Can a Blocked Drain Affect Aircon Performance?

A blocked drainage system may not immediately stop the aircon from producing cold air, but it can indicate that the evaporator area requires attention.

Excess moisture and accumulated dirt around the evaporator can contribute to unpleasant smells and poor cabin air quality.

If the problem is accompanied by weaker cooling, unusual smells or excessive moisture, a more complete car aircon inspection may be appropriate.

When Should You Visit a Car Aircon Specialist?

Consider getting your vehicle checked if you experience:

  • Water leaking onto the passenger-side floor
  • Repeatedly wet carpets
  • A musty smell when switching on the aircon
  • No condensation dripping underneath the vehicle despite heavy aircon use
  • Cooling performance becoming weaker
  • Unusual liquid leaking underneath the vehicle

A proper inspection can identify whether the issue is simply a blocked drain or whether another part of the air-conditioning system needs attention.

Keep Your Car Cabin Cool and Dry

In most situations, water dripping underneath your vehicle after using the aircon is a sign that the system is removing humidity as intended.

The more important warning sign is water appearing inside the cabin.

Singapore’s humid weather means car air-conditioning systems work hard throughout the year, so addressing drainage problems early can help prevent odours, moisture damage and unnecessary inconvenience.

If you are unsure whether the water coming from your vehicle is normal condensation or a sign of an aircon problem, MrKool’s car aircon specialists can inspect the system, identify the source and recommend the appropriate solution.
